Welcome to my Send Me To Serve fundraising page!
In August I will be relocating to Cleveland Ohio to complete a year of service with JVC. I will work with Youth Challenge which serves individuals with physical disabilities through recreational activities. I am eager to begin this year in anticipation of the growth that will occur that will impact my life forever.
JVC has four values which include spirituality, simple living, community, and social justice. I will have numerous opportunities throughout the year to develop and incorporate these values into my daily life. My decision to complete a year of service with JVC occurred during my week long experience in Ecuador. JVC will provide me the opportunity to develop the necessary resources to live a life towards social justice along with ways on how to incorporate others towards this movement.
The trip to Ecuador has given me the opportunity to discover the importance in life which is the power of love. The people I encountered lacked the basic necessities in life but survive each day through the power of love. In the United States, basic necessities are often forgotten due to the abundance of materialistic goods that are available. However, what the vast majority of people lack is the power of love for thy neighbor. We are an individualistic culture which focuses on the climb to the top of the ladder where we can flaunt all of our materialistic goods. The week I spent in Ecuador has taught me that love is the direct correlation with happiness; and to me, the richest person is the one with the most love and happiness.
The neighborhood I resided in for those seven days had very little resources in terms of physical objects. They just barely get by with the basic necessities. However, they are drowning in peace, love, and happiness. This was my wake up call. I want a life filled with the peace, love, and happiness I observed in Ecuador. To obtain this, I need to build strong meaningful relationships with those around me. Unfortunately, our society makes this a difficult task to complete because we are focused on materialistic lifestyles and being considered the most successful. We take for granted the privileges we are blessed with day after day. Every person in this world deserves a life of peace which is why I want to address the injustice that exists in so many ways.
I believe that everyone is created in the image and likeness of God and it pains me when I open my eyes to reality and see how subordinate groups are marginalized. Furthermore, it is challenging to see individuals of the dominate groups in our society live in an oblivious way to the fact that our society is created in a way that provides them constant advantages. I will admit that before I began my college career, I too was numb to this reality. Therefore, I am forever grateful that I have been blessed with the opportunity to gather an understanding which I can use towards creating a future for myself. I see my future involving a commitment to educating others and creating unity.
I would greatly appreciate any support you can provide me while I prepare for my year of service.
